The condenser is the other heat exchanger in a mobile A/C system. Nowdays, condensers are usually made out of aluminum, but in the past some were made of copper/brass. Condensers look very much like radiators, just a little thinner, and in fact, are usually located in front of the radiator, since the also depond on air flowing through them, the same way a radiator does. By the way, the vehicle's cooling system must be in tip-top shape in order for the air conditioning system to operate properly.

 

Like radiators and evaporators, condensers are also constructed as a series of tubes with fins around them. But unlike an evaporator, whose function is to absorb heat, the condenser's function is to give off heat. As a matter of fact, to give off the head contained in the refrigerant that it absorbed while it was flowing through the evaporator, the same way the radiator gives off heat from the engine coolant that was picked up while the coolant was flowing through the engine. The refrigerant enters the condensor as a high pressure "superheated" vapor, but while passing through the condenser and cooling, it turns back into a cooler high pressure liquid.

 

The condenser can be compared to a radiator in an engine cooling system:

- The radiator gives up heat from the hot engine coolant passing through it to the atmosphere.

- The condenser gives up heat from the hot A/C system refrigerant passing through it to the atmosphere.
