The receiver/dryer (also sometimes called a receiver/dehydrator) servers two very important functions in the A/C system:

1. The receiver/dryer servers as a temporary storage container for oil and refrigerant when neither are needed for system operation, such as during periods of low cooling demand, for instance. This is the "receiver" function of the receiver/dryer.

2. Receiver/dryers contain a material called desiccant. The desiccant is used to absorb any moisture (water) that may have gotten inside any of the other A/C system components during manufacture, assembly, or service. The moisture gets into the components through humidity in the air. This is the "dryer" function of the receiver/dryer.

Moisture is one of the major enemies of an air conditioning system. It can combine with refrigerant and form caustic corrosive substances which can cause serious damage to various system components. The receiver/dryer should be replaced essentially any time the system is opened for sservice, because when the inside of the system and/or receiver/dryer are exposed to the atmosphere, the desiccant becomes very quickly saturated with moisture from the surrounding air. It is only capable of absorbing a certain amount humidity before it loses its protective effectiveness.

The receiver/dryer looks like a small sealed metal can with an inlet and outlet, and is always located somewhere along the high pressure section of the system. Receiver/dryers are onl used on systems that contain expansion valves. Receiver/dryers could be (very loosely) compared to the coolant overflow reservoir in an engine cooling system.
